Here’s the latest in a long line of limited-edition M cars: the new BMW M4 CS. It was unveiled overnight in Shanghai – and it’s everything Munich knows about making fast sports cars distilled into one driver-focused coupe.
BMW M GmbH says it will roll out further versions of its cars, as it seeks to broaden its sales impact. The regular M cars will form the backbone of its range, topped by ‘performance-boosted Competition versions,’ according to Munich. ‘Then come the CS special-edition models, a notch higher still. Positioned on top are the performance-maximising “brand shapers” which display a clear motorsport or club sport character but are also fully road legal.’
2018 BMW M4 CS Exterior and Interior
Everything on the outside has been aggro ‘d up to reflect the super-duper-sporty nature of this revolutionary and ground-breaking M4 special edition. Carbon fiber sharp angles everywhere! Don’t cut yourself on all that edge!
Inside, the M4 CS gets lightweight BMW sports seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara, and that classic nod to race track – door handle deletion – appears, with a pull loop instead. Extreme lightweighting? Hardly, when all CS cars get the top hifi system and Professional sat-nav.
2018 BMW M4 CS Under the Hood
You want stats, naturally. The standard M4’s 3-litre turbo six has been wound up to 454bhp, a rise of around 30bhp over standard (or 10bhp over the Competition). Mated exclusively to the seven-speed paddleshift gearbox– no manual here– you’ll be completing 0-62mph in a scant 3.9 secs. And yes, it’s still rear-wheel drive.
The top speed is curtailed by M Division’s higher, 174mph limiter. Though with a claimed 33.6 mpg and 197g/km of CO2, it’s actually the greenest M4 yet, too. We can sense how much you care.
The car has a similar chassis to the Competition Package M4 and is fitted as standard with Adaptive M suspension and Active M Differential. While it still has a form of DSC stability control to save your skin, there is an M Dynamic Mode that apparently allows “controlled drifts”.
2018 BMW M4 CS Price
The car costs EUR116,900; official U.S. pricing has not been announced, but that’s approximately $125,000. And dare people to say the words, “But M4 GTS,” around you.
